Taking a risk seems like a fun rebellious thing to do when you’re a teenager trying to be cool and live on the edge. But, as you get older, the more you start to evaluate your choices and risks just seem, well, risky.

I spent the majority of my life living in the small town of Corner Brook, Newfoundland. I loved growing up there. All of my family is there, I had a great friend group, the mountains and nature are breathtaking and I had a great career there. I felt like I had everything I could ever need around me. Until one day I just didn’t. I had outgrown the one place in this world that brought so much joy and comfort throughout my entire life.

In my early twenties, I started traveling to different countries, where I met incredible, diverse people from all over the world. They would tell me stories about their life, culture and the interesting things they were doing for a living. When I would return from my travels, I started to feel like I was missing out and there were so many amazing opportunities happening all over the world except for the one place surrounding me. This made me start resenting my home town and resulted in me being very truly unhappy.

What stopped me from moving earlier was my fear of taking the risk. I would always talk myself out of it. I would tell myself that I have everything here I could ever need and could spend so much time with my family and nature. When I would talk about this to my family they would also reassure me that there was nothing out there better than here and how I was so successful in their eyes.

If this is all too familiar to you, let me start by saying that you are the only person who knows what’s best for you and you need to take control of your life and your happiness because nobody, even the people closest to you can help you make the right decision for you.

If you have your heart set out on making a move to a new city, town or country for that matter don’t hold back. Take the damn risk. You will regret every single day that you didn’t do it that much sooner. If you have passions, goals, and curiosity like I do then trust me, I’ve never been happier. I am constantly exploring, learning, meeting new people and doing what I love!
