HAYLEY STEINBERG'S SPIN ON FITNESS
Full name Hayley Steinberg
Title Spin Instructor, SpinCo
Location Toronto, ON
Tell us a bit about your background and what led you to start your fitness journey
Spinning was never actually my thing. I never wanted to try it because I thought it would make my legs bigger. My friend actually opened up SpokeHaus downtown and she introduced me to spinning. I really liked it and honestly never thought much of it. Since I was on Class Pass I started coming to SpinCo because it was closer to where I live. Michelle, the owner of SpinCo reached out and asked me to come audition. Which was so cool because she saw something in me that I didn't even see in myself. My friend Marlie of @kale_and_krunches actually works there as well so between the two of them asking I couldn't say no to the audition!
I feel like spinning has just brought out this whole new confidence in me and drive for wanting to do more. I've always loved it but I just never thought of myself as someone who would teach or motivate others. Now that I'm instructing, I want to gain all of the knowledge about fitness and branch out even further.
What I love about SpinCo is that it's a program where you’re not going fast fast fast to every song, it's very achievable. We purposely do a race, a climb, and a jog to keep you challenged but able to keep up. I love it so much because I always leave feeling so strong and happy. I let go of my negativity and sweat it all out. Whatever is going on in my life stays in that room and doesn't leave with me. When it comes to teaching my class I always want to show up no matter what because that's my hour where I can zone out and let go of all my stress. Physically and mentally it's the best thing for me.
I've always been athletic, I grew up playing hockey since I was 6 years old. I was the only girl on my teams and I was such a tomboy growing up. Athletics has always been a part of my life. I train with a personal trainer at Catalyst in Yorkville, I'm still on Class Pass and of course, I spin. I love changing things up. My favorite way to get active asides from spinning would be a nice run when the weather is good! I also love circuits and weight training.
Aside from instructing I'm a full-time grade 2 teacher in Victoria Village. I love kids and I love the lifestyle! It allows me to take on stuff like this. This summer will be where I focus on my fitness goals and see where it goes where's it's all new. Spin instructing has lit something up inside me so it's definitely a new passion I want to pursue.

How has fitness impacted your eating habits?
I eat very healthily now. Growing up I was the pickiest kid on the planet. I think I overdosed on carbs as a kid because I wouldn't eat anything other than macaroni. In university, I was eating like crap and I felt like crap. When I got home from university I just didn't feel good, I had gained a few pounds and made more of a conscious effort to eat healthy since then. The more active I am the healthier I want to eat and I don't crave 'bad' food. It really makes such a difference in how you feel.
What guidelines do you follow to maintain a healthy relationship with food?
I think the healthiest approach is to not restrict myself. I have certainly had my ups and downs with food. After university, I was restricting myself from carbs and sugar than when I did eat something 'bad' I would just binge, which wasn't healthy. I would restrict myself from having the things I like then when I did have it I would just want more and more. I still feel guilty when I eat something 'bad', it's hard not to, but I really try not to punish myself. I let myself have a little so that I can maintain balance. I want to have a life and be able to go out for dinner with friends and not limit myself.
How did fitness help you with your career?
When I did the education program I did my phys ed qualifications as well. Ideally, I would love to teach phys ed in the mornings and train and teach spin in the evenings. Life would be great! I do have those qualifications and hopefully, that's where my passion for fitness will take me! The teachers at my school now know how involved in the fitness community I am and I feel like it has given me the confidence to take charge and start planning activities for the kids at my school, like fitness night!
What motivates you?
The way that fitness makes me feel! I want to be a happy person in general and this whole thing has brought a twinkle to my eye. I also want to motivate my niece and nephew so that they grow up being active. My biggest motivator is my mom, she is such a fighter!
What are three tips you would give to someone who wants to take their fitness to the next level?
Step outside your comfort zone and try something new. You can plateau so easy so it's important to keep changing it up!
Working out with friends is huge! My plans are usually taking a class or going for a run with a friend. You don’t bail as easy when you have a set plan.
If you can afford it, having a personal trainer session 2-3 times per week will help you push to levels you didn’t even know existed within you.
What is your favorite treat?
Chocolate covered almonds!! I have such a sweet tooth. If you put the bag in front of me, look out!!
